Traveling with tools

I've had some experience with this. Tried taking my tuning hammer in my
carry-on numerous times and had varying results. Ultimately found that because
it's a "non-standard tool" over a certain length (5 inches?) it's up to the
discretion of each TSA supervisor. When the TSA agent differed me to the
supervisor, whom approved it, I asked what criteria they use. She said that since
it had a star tip it was "most likely acceptable", but still up to each
agent's discretion. I pressed her further and found that because of the unusual
tip, it "couldn't be used to take apart the plane." (You weren't planning to
carry on a blow torch, were you? :) Standard tools (screwdrivers, etc.) are a
definite no-go for carry-on. Of course, you should be able to check your
tools without any problem.
