appraisals

  John,

I would advise trying to find out what dealers are buying them for, be they grey market or made-for-US pianos. Then find out what dealers are selling them for.

I usually try to find out why the person is asking for an appraisal. It could be for resale, or for insurance purposes, or to get a value in a divorce situation.

For insurance purposes, you want to give a replacement value for the instrument. If the piano gets damaged or ruined, how much will it cost to replace it with a similar instrument?

For sale to a store, a wholesale value is more appropriate.

For resale to a private party, give a close-to-retail type value, but explain that a store will be able to offer more services--tuning, moving, warranty--so they can't expect to get the price a store could ask. Along with a thorough evaluation of the piano, this one would also be what I'd recommend if you are looking at it for a potential buyer.

I'm sure I missed something, but I hope this helps.

 Subject: appraisals

I have an appraisal coming up next week for a new client. They have a Yamaha G3, 6 ft grand they want to sell. They bought it used 14 years ago. I feel confident in appraising its condition but feel uneasy in giving a fair value for resale. I live in a market of mostly old uprights and don’t see a lot of grands up for sale. Any thoughts on this particular model or how to get better educated in this field? Much appreciated, John Pengelly The Tuning Fork
