The message below I received from Chuck Beck in response to the damper flange tool..... I saw your list on the pianotek list, and I'm not subscribed. If you haven't done any disassembly yet you may not have to. I have several Boston GP178s I care for at University here and have had several occasions to do this and have devised a simple method to save redoing a perfectly good damper regulation. Take a regular thin 6" steel rule (you don't like) and make a crisp 90 degree bend at 3mm, then again the opposite way at 30mm. Now you have a very slim offset flat-head screwdriver. If the screws are still in and haven't fallen out yet, this works well, and provides surprising torque. Some of the angles are a bit close and a little clearancing out of the side of the rule where it contacts the tray (between about 10 and 25mm would increase the arc you can achieve with the screwdriver under the tray. Now it takes 15 minutes instead of 2 1/2 hours to tighten the screws. If I can figure out how to get this on the list I will, if not, I hope this can help save you time. chuckbeck ----- Original Message ----- From: JBairdRPT at cs.com To: chadwick61 at cox.net Subject: Your post to pianotech held up RE:Damper tray flange screw Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2007 23:12:20 EDT Hi David, The PTG list software held up your post to pianotech (see below) because it was too large -- 654 KB with a limit of 400 KB. The limit is set as a courtesy to those who still have slow dial up connections. One option is to save the picture to a lower resolution (smaller file size) so that the whole email comes in under 400 KB, then resend. Here's the other option: ********************************** Go to http://www.ptg.org/files/ and upload your picture(s) or other large files. Once they have been approved (verified that they are not spam) and assigned file names, you can then send your post on to pianotech, minus the picture(s), but with links to them. Although there is some delay, this system works well. Alternatively, you could go ahead and send your post to pianotech right now, minus the pictures (or large files), and then when the pictures have been approved, you can send another post to pianotech saying "Here are the pictures I promised you." ********************************** By the way, I have dealt with this problem three times before. I talked with Steinway/Boston's Kent Webb, and he said there is no solution other than to remove the dampers and back action. HOWEVER, a fellow technician made a tool out of a 6" steel ruler, with various bends that allowed him to tighten these screws. We will try to get a response out. In the meantime, please try the suggestions above and repost. Please let me know if you have questions.
