damper guide rail bushings

I once attended a technical class at a convention where the instructor
showed us his method of securing the bushings. He sprayed a coat of
lacquer on the rail and let it dry. Then he bushed the rail with cloth
that was dampened with thinner. When the thinner dried, the bushing cloth
was held in place by the lacquer (or was it shellac?) FWIW.
