I like the nitrile gloves, too, but I use leather for the high wear spots.
Cut a strip of fairly thin leather about 3/4" wide, then cut various lengths
that will wrap around different fingers/thumb with enough overlap to allow
for gluing.  If you make these tight enough for each digit, they are
reusable for several years, are very comfortable, and hold up extremely well
against the onslaught of piano wire.
