Most of the time when I get a call from a new customer who needs tuning, I  
ask the customer to play
some notes over the phone for me, while I hold a vibrating tuning fork to  my 
other ear. This gives me a rough idea of what I'm in for, and prepares the  
customer before my visit in case of a big pitch raising job.
