Ditto to what John Dutton says. Labels are every bit as functional as folders, and you can create "filters" that will automatically make happen what you want. For example: if a message is to pianotech and contains the word "temperament", "archive" it (which removes it from your Inbox) and apply the label "temperament" (which makes it appear in the Temperament label).
