Worn Letoff and butt buckskin on Vert Regulation

Is it ever feasable to replace letoff button felts when doing a regulation.  Yes and they can be easily removed with a 10:1 solution of Water:DIF using a syringe to "inject" them, wait five minutes, they'll practically fall off.

Would brushing with a small wire brush help eliminate that indentation which causes another precarious situation of inaccurate let off?  It might help a little but I'd just as soon replace them.
