I haven't bothered with a strip mute for nigh on 30 years now. Hardly 
see the point. Always found it much better to use 4-6 rubber/felt mutes 
and tune unisons as I go. Ends up much more stable much quicker and I 
know the tuning as a whole isnt going to wander as much as it does when 
you've stripped off half the darn instrument...tuned middle strings... 
and then set the unisons to those. 

Others experience no doubt will vary.
