The piano wire is from a bi-chord and it has 1 wrapping of copper around the
core.
Sorry for the confusion.
I still can't believe that someone has not discovered a way to "pre-stretch"
a new bass string. Maybe something like hanging a weight on the end without
the loop?

With the different advice being given, I don't remember if it was a
single bass string or a bi-chord. (Brian, please tell us). If it is a
single bass string, yes, there is enough elasticity in it to allow it
to be pulled half a step high. And since it's on a Betsy Ross spinet, I
don't think Brian needs to worry about it going out of tune,
because the customer would probably not even hear it if it was a little
flat.

Hey Now,
I'm reluctant to stick my rather prominent nose into this topic,
but..... I have a few questions about advise given thus far.
First Brian says its a wound single bass string. How do you mute a
single string and leave it for next time.
The advise of pulling it 1/2 step sharp on a single bass string? I do
this on plain wire but bass stings? I was of the understanding that
bass strings at pitch are closer to the breaking point. Would a single
wound bass string tolerate being pulled a half step sharp? Sounds risky
to me.
Just a few thoughts and questions for the enlightened ones.
Thanx in advance.
