Just like unravelling the beginning of a toilet roll! They've been making it for hundreds of years and still haven't got it right.

  Rick:

This is one area of piano work that for the most part has failed in its evolution more than most. Even Steinway - as reluctant to change as anyone - has replaced the bushed hole for damper rods with a better idea. Even the wonderful Walter studio pianos have the pedal rods (rough maple dowels) running through bushed holes that make horrific noises. If you find a piano where the positioning of the rods causes a lot of rub you'll be much better off redesigning the system unless you just love re-lubricating them each time you see the instrument. I wish I knew how many damper systems I've redesigned to get rid of the friction noise caused by that arrangement. Not all of those systems rub hard enough to cause noise..it depends on how the levers are placed, but if you find one that makes a lot of noise, a frictionless redesign is the best solution.

  OK List,

I've searched the archives, but can't find the thread. Two Asian pianos, K&C (Samick) and a PR . Both uprights, with same problem. Sustain rod is making that scratchy noise . What is the lube of choice, does the bracket have to be removed to apply? Should I rebush with new buckskin? Very troublesome ....

  Thanks,
