tapered pins

I have an old Broadwood square that has tapered pins. You'd think you
could bang them in deeper for better holding power... but it doesnt
work. At least not with the taper these have... which is pretty extreme.

Someone did (does). As far as I know, Vose had tapered pins up
to the time the depression in 1930 did them in. Don't know
about Bosendorfer. Tapered holes with parallel sided pins as
about the worst fit you could come up with for tuning pins in
a pinblock - unless they're drilled from underneath.
