Frank, how about the Pedal Lyre, a silly fanciful name related to the supposed appearance of the pedal suspending arrangements on early ornate grands? "Lyre" in no way describes function, only appearance. Del, I love your post, which crossed my last one. I think that is a perfect way for a piano design feature to get named, and a perfect and joyous thing for piano etymologists of the future to research! Best regards, David.
