Hi John,

I suggest first that you decide what kind of device you want, that is
a digital piano or a synthesizer.
A digital piano is basicaly the modern version of an electric organ,
that is a keybord with a lot of different sounds. The difference of an
organ and a piano is the keyboard. Nowadays all the digital piano
manufacturers try to immitate a real piano: weighted keys and a
sampled sound. And to make it more attractive they put a lot of sounds
and a sequencer (which you won't need BTW).
A Synthesizer is also a keyboard with a lot of sounds and no weighted
keys, that it has the particularity that you can create your own
sounds by sound synthesis (from there the name Synthesizer) or modify
all the sounds that come with the instrument.
So, if you just want a good piano sound and the best weighted keyboard
available then I will recomend a digital piano, if what you are
looking for is to have fun with sounds then go for a synthesizer.
But there is another option! What if you want both? Then I will
recomend to buy the simplest digital piano and a synthesizer sound
module. By simplest I mean a digital piano with very few sounds and
good keyboard. will cost around $1000. (I own a clavinova that cost me
$999.00) and a sound module is a little device that you put on top of
your piano with a lot of knobs that comes with thousands of sounds
(depending on the brand and model) and you can buy it for another $1000.
Now if you don´t care for the weighted keys and 88 note keyboard you
can buy for $100 a keyboard controller and spend the rest of your
money on a great sound module or two modules. A controller is a
keyboard that doesn´t sound at all, you just plug it to your computer/
sound module and it just triggers the sound your telling to.

My recomendation is that you go to a big music store and you try these
things, touch them, listen to them and ask the clerk alll the
pertinent questions you have, and then look for the one you liked on
the internet to get the best price either used or new!

Good luck!

Rafael.

PD: I also have a mac and an emu virtuoso 2000 + protozoa sound module
