Hi,Bob!  Letters V  indicates Varnish,s-shellac and 3-4 digit numbers-code
of that particular material and refinisher told that it helps them to decide
what  materials to use when stripping the finish.Just passing some facts
from other sources.Regarding age of the piano:Just count the ANNUAL RINGS on
the soundboard and you will know the age [save it for April 1]  See you in

The letter indicates the year of manufacture, and the (usually) four-digit
number is a number which at least used to be on every part, which keeps them
together as they travel through the factory without a serial number. Like a
temporary serial number. When the piano is finished, the actual serial
number is assigned.
