luthier - someone who builds or restores stringed instruments

The Guild of American Luthiers is an open membership organization. Pay up and you're in, and you get the magazine, which is the main benefit.
They publish very good books, plans and the magazine. The focus is mainly on guitar building and repair, sometimes other fretted instruments. Not much on violin. I subscribed for several years, enjoyed reading but didn't learn anything applicable to harpsichord or piano work. Harpsichords were never mentioned.
The American Historical Keyboard Society or American Musical Instrument Society might have more to offer.
Also note that the PTJournal is now publishing a monthly article on piano history and conservation.

Subject: luthier - someone who builds or restores stringed instruments

Hey Guys: Just read an article in the news paper this morning about a guy who repairs and restores guitars and other strung instruments in New Orleans. This, of course, was in reference to damages done by Katrina. However, that's not the point of my question. I am curious as to if you, or anyone you know who rebuilds pianos. belongs to the Guild of American Luthiers. If so,what are the benefits. It seems to me that I have heard comments to the effect that harpsichord builders are in the luthiers guild. Why not piano re-builders?
