My most detested cost-cutting measure came from Wurlitzer, not Pratt-Read. They made the keys straight from the key fronts to the balance rail. The change in spacing to match the scale at the strike line was absorbed in the space between the balance rail and the back rail. This made it possible to standardize the mortising of the keys, front and balance, for all keysets regardless of the variations in scale breaks or key lengths. The down side is that the dog-leg in the key behind the balance rail must be so severe that the balance rail bushing will never touch the balance pin on one side, while it bears so heavily on the other side, that it wears through the felt in a fortnight! Baldwin sold the Wurlitzer key equipment to do this to Pearl River. I thing they have since abandoned this equipment. .... Good Riddance!
