I agree so much with Delwin and others on this matter. People may TALK about sentimental value, but when it coesm to it, they're not generally so sentimental about the instrument that they're willing to spend any money on it!

Sometimes I feel as if my area has little BUT old uprights, so I'm used to these issues. As I've mentioned before, the car can be a good analogy. Ask, "How old is your car?". Although they may have warm feelings about their first car, in which they passed the driving test, in general they're not still d riving around in it 20 years later. Sentiment must secede to practicality. If the piano is really at the end of the line you can say "If you just like the look of this old piano in the room then by all means keep it. But it can't be made playable. If you want a PIANO you must think again".

Matthew, I'd suggest the CA method, and make it clear that it's without any guarantee of results, and see what they say.

David.
