Kathy,
 Good tip on the ignition pliers. I have the perfect set ,made in the 50's from my late Dads tool box.(Image is the exact model) He's been gone for almost 30 years now and I enjoy the connection with him through something as simple a set of pliers.I will try them next time  (If there is a next time)
 As to the general topic I agree with Jons' post about the vice grip and spin method. I say this never having tried the heat em up trick so you make the call.
Wim, I had trouble selling a plastic elbow replacement in the 70's because plastic meant "cheap" especially after  the last ones failed. Respectfully ,we are in a new century and the world is made of plastic including my future knee.I don't give any option  .I just use the best materials available and in my opinion the Vagias qualifies.

  Another suggestion.  Get a pair of ignition pliers from an automotive store....They fit perfectly into the wippen slot.
