I feel your pain! The only liquid that i have used is Balistol. It's pretty good, but how bad are we talking here? I have used emery cloth to clean rust off strings, but that was a newish grand with easy access. To really clean up an upright, you would have to loosen the pressure bar, which means lowering string tension, risk breaking screws, and lots of time.
