An alternative might be to simply move the rear row of pins towards the center of the bridge. I tried this a while back with good results. No need to remove the strings. Let the tension down enough to pry the string with an offset screw driver, drill the hole and insert the pin. You could even slightly stagger the rear pin line to reduce the chance of future splitting. Work from the treble end downwards using the dislocated pin as the purchase. Double-up on the pin if the split is large enough to prevent a solid bearing.
