Yes, safer to put it in the check-in luggage. I was able to take mine as a carry-on item on Air France from Montpellier to London, but then on the London to Glasgow flight, I had to check it in as hold baggage. They gave me a box to put it in. That was in 2003 or 2004, and if anything, security has heightened since then. Best regards, David. Hi David, As one who lives in the airport nearly half of every month, I'd highly recommend that you pack it in your checked luggage. To see the list of all the banned items, go here... http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm You'll notice about 1/2 of the way down the list, under the "tools" heading, that tools longer than 7" are banned from carry-ons.
