When something like this happens, I go down to the tail end and pluck 
the waste segments. Sometimes many seem to ring on the same note, 
sometimes the one which supposedly doesn't damp. Winding more braid or 
bushing cloth around the worst offenders will sometimes get rid of the 
eternally singing speaking length strings.

You have to be careful not to muffle EVERYTHING down there at the far 
end, just do enough to get the ringing to stop. The general tone needs 
some of those sympathetic vibrations.
