[pianotech] removal of key leads in "blind" holes

My cautious two cents,
If one is going to plug keyleads, may as well attempt to maintain the continuity of the keystick as much as possible by using plugs of the same species and grain orientation as the keystick. For example sugarpine, basswood, or the current production level flavor spruce. I'm pretty sure, (although I may be wrong) that the ready made plugs available are poplar which has different characteristics concerning dimensional stability than any of the keystick species. In my opinion there is no sense in adding a known variable to the mix in this delicate portion of the keystick. Mike

BTW, Tapered plug cutters are available and are no more expensive than straight plug cutters:

  vs.

  Straight: http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2004372/8965/8-Piece-Deluxe-Plug-Cutting-Kit.aspx

just an FYI in case anyone would need them.

Oh, right, I forgot about Pianotek's plugs. And thanks for the tip of using old keys -- I have many.

Drill a small 1/8" hole from the back and punch them out with a 1/8" punch.
I use Epoxy Putty mixed with powdered stain to the color of the wood to fill
the holes. You can make plugs from old keys so the grain runs the right way
or you can buy plugs (Pianotek sells them by the bag). They're usually
      straight not tapered.
