Tom Cobble sent me a series of photos of this very procedure a few years
ago. I've never used it, but here are my choices of those photos to best
demonstrate the procedure (for us rookies!)

The initial through-hole should be as close to the diameter of the spade bit
as possible, without being smaller... a little larger is ideal.  After
boring out the recess for the T-nut, you can chase out the through-hole to
the diameter needed for the T-nut.
