Brian: A month ago today Dave Brubeck was awarded a Mus. D. degree and not posthumously. dp David M. When they get a little far out there, when they're so far off on improvisation that I can't even tell what they're playing anymore, I lose interest, it almost becomes "noise" to me. I did find one recording by Dave Brubeck http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3JcuEA0IrM that I keep coming back to. I do not like the piano that he's playing at all, very tinny to my ear. But the music speaks to me. I hadn't realized that Dave had passed away in February but was also sad to hear of that when listening to this especially mellow piece. Also found a clip on youtube of Dave playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", not sure where or when, but it was an awful recording. Would have loved to have heard him play it without all the background noise... Anyway, thanks for the proddings in that direction. I enjoy good mellow piano jazz immensely.
