                You don't say what piano you're working on but . Ruth Phillips has a specially formulated black lacquer that matches the poly used in Asian pianos. I've used this with good results when the poly was too thin and gave me problems such as you describe.

Hi, David:

   Unfortunately, the finish was probably urethane, not polyester.  Urethane is extremely thin.  It looks exactly like poly.  As for your question, unless you know exactly what was on there, spotting it in is going to be difficult.  Lacquer is much softer than poly or urethane, so the final buff out is going to show where the new material meets the old.  If you can contact Ruth Phillips at Allied Piano, she can probably help you out with the best solution.  She has some urethanes to match almost any finish.  At this time she's probably at Las Vegas convention teaching finish repair.

I am looking for a magic wand that will fix a problem I have with a polyester repair.

After creating the dam at the damaged part of a fall on an older Kawai upright, I did the usual sanding down through all the guages to the final 2000 grit, to find I had gone through the finish to the wood. This is the first time I have had such a thin coating of polyester to contend with. I have thought about digging out the offending area again,(about 1 inch across) and filling it as before. however, this will no doubt give me a bigger problem than I now have. I have tried spraying the area with gloss paint, however it is too difficult to match the finishes. Does anyone have a solution other than a full re-spray of the whole fall?
