I always feel the pins. Even thought I have sight, I don't trust it. I feel around and make sure the pin is pushed in as far as it needs to go. I went to tune a Kawai grand back in November that didn't have any hinges. It was a hotel piano. I'm not sure how on earth they were riped off. the hardward is gone on one part. I had to lift the lid off to tune it. It was a heavy one.
