Re: Distance Charges...

I live in a semi-rural area, across the river from St Louis. I have a set tuning fee for anyone within a 20 mile radius of my house. After that, in chunks of 5 miles, I add another $1/mile one-way. So if they are 40 miles from my house, it's <std tuning fee> + $20.

My reasoning is that the IRS "gives" approx 50 cents mileage credit. So I should at least get that. And even though that's a bit stiff if I keep the car for quite some time, it's costing me time spent traveling... aka lost time/revenue.

I will tell the customer that if they can find another piano in the area that can be tuned the same day, they can split the mileage charge.

I'm kind of considering even dropping that charge, for more motivation on their part... especially since I'm relatively new to the area and would like to work up a decent customer base... but we'll see how business progresses.

My mileage charge is not a hard & fast rule for me...
But in the end, it's all about "I've got it, they want it." OR "They have it, I want it."
