It won't actually make the sound louder. Stiffening in this manner is an attempt to improve sustain (usually). More stiffness means less loudness, at least at attack, but a slower rate of energy loss, i.e. more sustain. There are some cracks in the sound board but not very wide. I suspect they may have been put in there to "bolster" the sound (increase the volume) as it was in a retirement home - you know - older people and their ability to hear has gone down!!??
