Which is incorrect. To overcome the friction of the bearing surfaces, 
it's absolutely necessary for the first segment to be above equilibrium 
tension at some point to change the pitch of the speaking length. It's 
inescapable, whatever you're doing with the tuning pin.

Apparently not. The physics hasn't changed for me, and still can't be 
argued past.
