[pianotech] What is the name of this string making technique?

Where is JD, the string maker?  We had some discussion about this a little while ago, and he had photos of various string ends that he made.  Check the archives.

No, schraffed strings are when they rough up the core wire to help very thin wrap wire to hold tightly.
 
But sorry, I can’t remember what to call this technique – I would call it “back-wrapping the end. “

My Mapes pricelist lists "Schraffed Piano Strings". I believe that's the term you're hunting for.
