I've also heard that methanol works a little better. But not only is it harder to get, it is much more toxic. So I stick with the friendlier chemical.

The solvent is the vehicle that cuts through the lanolin and introduces the water to the wool.
I used to buy Methanol at the drugstore back in the 70's because the books said so but the denatured works just fine.
