Yet at a point where metal rubs against felt, and friction serves no needed purpose, what is the harm in lubricating? A coating of lubricant reduces friction which reduces wear; it slows oxidation, which slows the increase of friction; and it reduces noise, which we do need less of. I've never seen dust or dirt attracted to or even adhere to teflon; and I strongly doubt it is hygroscopic, having never seen or heard of such a thing. So please tell me again why it's not a positive good to lubricate guide rail bushings or for that matter any felt that rubs metal? Thanks. -- Mark Schecter On Sep 3, 2011, at 1:37 PM, tnrwim at aol.com wrote: > > I am not talking 'oil'. > I never noticed Protek attract oil or dirt. > Maybe I am not as observant as you, but must admit I never checked back. > John Ross > Windsor, Nova Scotia > > > I realize Protec is not an oil, and it might not attract oil and dirt. It probably doesn't, since I use it all the time on action parts. But I stand by my original statement, that a properly bushed and polish damper wire should not need any kind of lubricant. If the damper hangs up, it's usually because of improper travel of the wire, or a tight center. > Wim > > > -----Original Message----- > From: John Ross <jrpiano at eastlink.ca> > To: pianotech <pianotech at ptg.org> > Sent: Sat, Sep 3, 2011 10:30 am > Subject: Re: [pianotech] Damper wire bushing lubrication? > > I am not talking 'oil'. > I never noticed Protek attract oil or dirt. > Maybe I am not as observant as you, but must admit I never checked back. > John Ross > Windsor, Nova Scotia > On 03-09-2011, at 5:24 PM, tnrwim at aol.com wrote: > >> >> Doesn't a lubricant give some protection against corrosion, so wouldn't it be better to put some on? >> Especially in sea air places like yours!
