Jim, I'm with you ALL THE WAY!!! The tone considered desirable to "cut through an orchestra" is NOT, necessarily, the tone that home consumers seek, as they sit to play for their own enjoyment! (And suspect that it would NOT be their preference, were they educated regarding their options, as Arledge's study seems to show.)
Of course "you know who" produces pianos with this tone, claiming it is THE right way for a piano to sound: 
but as long as customers are shown the difference, and allowed to choose which they prefer (while reminded that ALL tonal profiles are valid, and their choosing a mere matter of taste!) there should be no problem.

(Who has a bunch of better-made than "you know whose" pianos, and a mighty hard time convincing people of it!)
