[pianotech] 1904 Starr Upright

I owned a 1920-something Starr upright - that was the piano I learned to tune on. IMHO, it was a middle-of-the-road quality piano for its time - however, I have always thought that pianos built back then were generally of better average quality than what you see now - pretty much all of them were good quality. Today we see a broader range of quality - many good, some okay and some (many?) poor quality.

So with that said, and being willing to stick my neck out some, I'd venture to say that the quality of a 1904 Starr upright WAS (and I mean when it was new) perhaps a notch below a new Yamaha U-3 or so - maybe the equivalent of an average Korean upright or a good Chinese upright.

Value equal to a new S&S M? I don't think so.

I have a pretty good idea of the various grades the new upright could be, but I'm not sure where this piano stood in it's day as far as the quality and prestige of the piano.
