While spending $500 on an old spinet might not make sense to any of US, to the owners of these things (many of whom may have never heard a better piano) it makes plenty. So I gently suggest that MAYBE they'd like to invest in a different instrument ( of which countless are available cheap now, on C-list) explaining what ought to be available; and if they start looking insulted by this, just forget about it and do the service they want.

P.S. In my previous post about "scouting" pianos for customers, I mentioned evaluating the instrument, getting the price down (if honestly warranted after a thorough examination) and then "splitting the difference" with the customer. What I did not mention, though, is that I offer both this option OR a flat fee for going with them to see it; and they usually choose the "split the difference" plan, and it works out best for both of us.
