Subject: [pianotech] Wurlitzer with expanding brackets?

Greetings,

I worked on a 1988 Wurlitzer grand yesterday, a G411, #2052294. The family
used it quite a bit about 15-18 years ago with their kids growing up. Since
then, it just sat in their living room unplayed and unmaintained for the
last 15 years.

Upon inspection, all 88 hammers were blocking. Blow distance was about 49mm
and the hammers were resting on their felts. I pulled the action and noticed
the action brackets were that YC gray, however, by the date this should've
been made by Samick?

Keyframe was seated properly, all the action screws were properly tightened,
I didn't measure key dip but it felt normal for my 46 years of playing...
and other than a few hammer flanges getting re-pinned, everything else
seemed okay. A few back checks weren't checking, too. I don't know if that's
relevant but I'll put it down.

I adjusted the letoff for now, figuring that's more easily reversible should
it be a growing bracket problem. Adjusting letoff took a full 2-3 360° turns
to get it to about a 2mm letoff. The letoff buttons dropped about 1/8" -
3/16" in order to reach a workable position.

Does anyone know if these expanding brackets could've found their way in to
this piano? It seems like it was built before YC started building them. Any
ideas?

I see this piano again tomorrow at noon. Thanks!

Regards,

Rob McCall
