I talked with Duaine (at a BHS - Barbershop Harmony Society - rehearsal) and found out the computer had been loaded with Linux software from Dell. And Duaine wanted WinXP in it. He loaded the WinXP software from another source and there is probably some ruminant (Sp) of Linux in the computer that makes the functions key operate the way they do. The function keys always work just by pressing them, but it can depend on the individual piece of software. Windows XP itself does not require multiple key presses as you mentioned, but maybe the software you need to use them for does. Good to hear you found an answer. As soon as discovered that, all is well. So, I have to press the: ALT and Fn then the F4 (example) So embarrassed. -- Duaine Hechler Piano, Player Piano, Pump Organ - Tuning, Servicing & Rebuilding (314) 838-5587 / dahechler at att.net / www.hechlerpianoandorgan.com Home & Business user of Linux - 12 years
