That's funny, I never had to do that before, and I used Windows XP for many
years.  The function keys always work just by pressing them, but it can
depend on the individual piece of software.  Windows XP itself does not
require multiple key presses as you mentioned, but maybe the software you
need to use them for does.

In the heat of the moment with Dell and the registration mess, I just
remembered that in Win XP, to get the function key to activate you have to
also press down the ALT key.

As soon as discovered that, all is well. So, I have to press the: ALT and Fn
then the F4 (example)

So embarrassed.
