Anne and Richard, thank you very much for those responses. Anne, I was indeed struck while tuning the piano by its being a terrific instrument. In point of fact it was hard to tune, because, having a good scale, everything was audible and as it hadn't been tuned for over a year, I had to work hard to get it to sound nice. I gripped the leg to haul myself up after lubricating the pedals and was surpriszed that the piano rooled very easily forward on its century-old casters. The rear of the pedals, in their brackets, are enclosed in a neat little box with a closing plate on top, and four holes in the plate to apply lubrication! Becsteins are not all equally good, as I am sure we all find, but this one is indeed super. Best regards, David.
