Front:  from the front of the key along the bottom to the center of the balance rail hole. Back:  from the center of the balance rail hole to a point at the bottom of the key directly below the capstan. All measured along the bottom of the key.

Thanks so much for this. The difference in sharps and naturals is interesting and Fred makes some good points. My question remains , though, how best to accurately , reliably and repeatably ( is that a word? ) determine the front and back key measurement?  I feel a long phone call to Nick  coming on.........
