Lots of comments on this thread but there are a couple of issues.  First I
don't think the product of levers method of calculating the action ratio is
as random as it would seem from this discussion.  Nor is the direct
measurement technique that practical when designing an action from scratch
or, say, making a new keyset in which a new key ratio needs to be calculated
to produce an action of a specific ratio.  Clearly there must be a method
using the product of levers that corresponds to the direct measurement
technique or action designers would be shooting in the dark.
