I believe your speculation regarding a spring is correct, but it will
be the repetition-spring which is doing the work for the jack return
also. Notice that the rep' spring runs through what is almost
certainly a slotted wippen heel. There must be a loop cord which we
can't see, which is attached to the front of the jack (on the
key-front side of the jack-centre), so that the spring provides the
reverse jack rotation which is required to return it under the
knuckle after lett-off. This is an interesting concept, because with
this arrangement the jack escapement will be running in the same
direction as the rotation of the roller as the let-off point is
approached. Let-off should be a little less obvious in this action
than it is with a conventional arrangement. The idea of the lower
repetition-lever-centre is almost certainly intended to lower
friction between the knuckle and repetition lever during the let-off.
But I suspect that the centre has been lowered to such a degree that
there may well be some friction in the opposite direction to that
which is usual, with respect to a 'standard' action.
