Susan, >. . . Might there be a small coil spring hidden inside >the curve, pushing directly against the top part of the jack? I believe your speculation regarding a spring is correct, but it will be the repetition-spring which is doing the work for the jack return also. Notice that the rep' spring runs through what is almost certainly a slotted wippen heel. There must be a loop cord which we can't see, which is attached to the front of the jack (on the key-front side of the jack-centre), so that the spring provides the reverse jack rotation which is required to return it under the knuckle after lett-off. This is an interesting concept, because with this arrangement the jack escapement will be running in the same direction as the rotation of the roller as the let-off point is approached. Let-off should be a little less obvious in this action than it is with a conventional arrangement. The idea of the lower repetition-lever-centre is almost certainly intended to lower friction between the knuckle and repetition lever during the let-off. But I suspect that the centre has been lowered to such a degree that there may well be some friction in the opposite direction to that which is usual, with respect to a 'standard' action.
