Colleagues:

I'm sorry if it sounded as if I was responding "testily". That was not my intent. It was simply a question. I have been on the ECC since shortly after it was created as an ad hoc committee. It was subsequently made into a standing committee. Tim's question "It won't happen. The PTG seems bent on making all this public" stumped me so I asked for clarification.

PTG is a charter. It can't and doesn't have "plots", it can't "seem bent" on things. The course of PTG is decided in Council, is executed by the Board, and certain tasks are handed off to Committees. If you look at the Council minutes very little has been included that involves the ECC. We got approval to invest considerable money in the 20-year CD project (which has been recovered through CD sales). Some of that money was subsequently reinvested in producing the 3-year CD (which is currently being returned through sales). The Board did approve the purchase of a new server when our old one died. Other than that, I can't remember anything that Council or the Board has done that impacted the ECC's work.

What I'm trying to say is that ECC sincerely wants to run the PTG lists and the web site as the membership wants it run -- within the funding and manpower available to us. In the past we have not heard any ground swell of sentiment to restrict the archives. If this becomes an issue, we'll certainly take a look at it. We'd have to try to determine if this really is a concern of the majority or just a vocal minority.

We do hear from time to time that we need a moderator to censor the inappropriate posts. This is mainly a resource issue. We don't have the person/hours to do that. Just catching the spam, viruses, wrong addresses, subscribe/unsubscribe, "what's my password" etc. posts is a significant job. Moderating the lists would take a paid position.

So, I still don't know how it was determined that the "PTG is bent" on something. If the membership really wants a change here it can be done. There is nothing "bent" that has to be "straightened". Please let us know.

Very sincerely and non-testily,

dave
