I may have been among the first in North America to use stainless
steel wire from Pure Sound. I have had good results with the wire in
restringing instruments from the period 1850-1875. Some of my
European colleagues who have tried to use the wire for 20th-century
instruments report frequent string breakage. Some years ago I asked
Röslau in Germany to test original iron and steel wires from early
19th-century pianos. The results can be found on my website at
http://www.mozartpiano.com/articles/wiretest.html
The wire test results might suggest some areas of inquiry for your
study.
