Ric, You certainly bring up interesting points where training is concerned. The FSU master's program accepts applications from candidates who have already completed an undergraduate music degree and a certificate in piano technology from a residence school. Essentially, they graduate from our two-year program with seven years of schooling under their belts. Our mission at FSU is musicianship first in any of our degree offerings which puts technicians in a unique comfort zone when working with performing keyboardists. Some ideal examples of this are historic keyboard performers who require dialogue concerning temperament and repertoire. Another example is in recording session environments when references to the score are common. When the performer can communicate musically with the technician, collaboration moves to a higher level. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Anne Anne Garee, Program Director for Piano Technology Florida State University College of Music 122 N.
