By the way, in the 1820's Roller and Blanchet, a Parisian piano firm, produced a key activated tuning monochord scaled to produce equal temperament. If the instrument matched the scaling of their own pianos, it could have produced very good results. Even if it did not match the scaling of the instrument being tuned, it could not have produced anything like a well-temperament progression of thirds. ES
