Hi Paul,

I would let them hang themselves with it, it was their idea to schedule it
without checking with you first, why should you "save" them?

One of the artsy colleges in town came to me to be the "hired gun" for their
concert work, they hired another from out of town for the classroom and
studio pianos. When they insisted that I had to tune on Sunday morning for a
faculty recital I was displeased but showed up and did the job.
When I was told to pre-tune the S&S "D" for the Jim Brickman concert the day
prior to his concert, I did so including finding the rattle in the low bass
thanks to suggestions from this list. I was to then be back for sound check
the following day of the concert at 3:30. I was there. Brickman showed up at
5:40 and proceeded to "rehearse" with the 2 vocalists that were appearing
with him. Finally at 6:25 the theatre manager suggested they move elswhere
to rehearse or perhaps go eat since the theatre doors opened at 7 and
curtain was at 7:30. I re-tuned the D and was gone by 7.
I billed for the full amount of hours I spent on the job the time from the
first day and from 3:30 the second day I haven't heard from them again but
was paid promptly.

It was their feeling that I should be willing to tune at their beck and call
at my customary rate, no extra charge for weekends, evenings, etc. I
understand this the norm for most CAUT's and if I were salaried with some
sort of benefits I wouldn't mind as much either.
I wasn't, I'm self-employed with all the overhead that entails. The school
uses a self-taught Steinway rebuilder(that's how he describes himself) to
rebuild their pianos. I was informed, while I was doing the Brickman work,
that they didn't want me to do any tech work, just tuning because he had
given them a warranty on the rebuilt pianos. I told them fine, call him and
tell him to get over here and find the rattle! They decided they would pay
me to find it

I don't miss them.

Mike
