Ed,

Introduce corrosion onto the V bar and agraffes? I've always thought that they should be slick enough to where your fingernail would glide w/o noticable friction. I don't put on any lubricant, although I know many European rebuilders do. One fellow from the Netherlands swears by a tiny dot of Vaseline wiped on the bridge pin. But no, I didn't use lubricants but I did buff the agraffes and V bar. It's always been a good thing before. I think...

Well, there is your problem!  If there is low friction at the bearing
points, it is almost impossible to get a note to stay put, as there is nothing to
keep the string from moving back and forth under the force of heavy
playing.
  You may want to take a cotton ball, soaked in acetone, and lightly dab it
on the string contact points.  This will remove any lube and create a small
amount of micro-corrosion that will help keep the string where you put it.
